They are often confused or used as synonyms, although these are fundamentally different formats with different goals, conditions and requirements. What is a startup accelerator

An accelerator is an intensive programme designed for an existing startup with a team and an initial product concept. A typical accelerator lasts 3–6 months, during which the startup receives mentorship, training, access to an investor network, and funding in exchange for a stake in the company (typically 5–10%).

Well-known Israeli accelerators: 8200 EISP, Google for Startups Israel, Microsoft for Startups. They are focused on technology startups with the potential to scale internationally. Entry requirements typically include an established team and at least an MVP or a clear technological idea.

What is an incubator

The incubator works with earlier stages and over a longer horizon—usually 1–3 years. Israel's government technology incubators (run by the Innovation Authority) provide startups with funding (grant), physical space (office) and technology development support in exchange for a share. The selection criterion is innovative technology with commercialization potential.

An incubator is essentially a joint venture between the state and a startup: the state takes on part of the development risk, the startup undertakes to stay in Israel and develop the technology here.
